Solid-State NMR (Bernd Reif)

Please note that Bernd Reif was appointed Professor at the Technische Universität München in 2010. He still has coworkers at the FMP.

Our group is interested in biomolecular systems that are situated at the interface between solution and solid. In this area, membrane proteins and amyloidogenic peptides and proteins are the most interesting "target molecules". By nature, structural information of these systems is difficult to obtain by means of X-ray crystallography or standard solution state NMR methods. We would like to get more insight into the mechanisms that lead to protein aggregation at atomic resolution. We study membrane proteins to understand which conformational changes in a membrane protein are required to actively transport a small organic molecule through a phospholipid bilayer.

We want to answer these questions by application of a combination of modern solution state and solid state NMR methods. This requires the development of techniques which are particularly suited to address these problems.
